The Reckless Coursework Trailer #2

Evaluation

- If I was to complete this task again I'd use more camera shots/movement to make my trailer look more technically pleasing and professional.

- I’d especially include more tracking/reverse tracking shots and ECU’s to help portray the characters emotions.

- In terms of lighting, I think my trailer is too dark and if I was to complete the task again I’d think about the exposure settings on the camera and which one I’d use.

- I think my trailer is reasonably easy to follow, however if I was to make it again I’d make my storylines even clearer and portray each characters identity a little bit more.- Maybe include a few more POV shots to create denser parallel narratives?

- I’d make sure that the actors spoke louder when they said their lines so that the soundtrack would not drown their voices.

- Because the dialogue was too quiet, I had to lower the volume of the soundtrack and increase the volume of the dialogue.

- The use of voice overs almost made my product cross over to the documentary mode of
genre. I think this worked however as it helped portray the storylines better to my target audience.

- Better location is necessary.

- More camera angles and shot types are needed.

- Better scripting and casting.

- Need to pay more attention to props and costume.

- Needed to look more into character profiles and behaviour.

2nd Preliminary task trailer template #1

Evaluation

This is a soap trailer for the EastEnders Christmas special. There is a wide audience range varying from young teen-late adult.

Camera movement

-In shot one there is a LS and a camera tilt.
-Shot two involves an OTS shot into a MCU.
-Shot three is a MS from a low angle.
-Shot four is a MCU with asymmetrical framming which fades into shot five.
-Shot six is a MS into a reverse tracking shot.
-Shot seven is a MCU and camera zooms into a CU.
-Shot eight is a CU and the camera zooms into an ECU.
-Shot nine uses a voyeristic point of view and the camera zooms and tilts into an MCU.
-Shot ten is an MCU shot with asymmetrical framming which is when the subject is pushed to the far side of the frame.
-Shot eleven involes a pan up into an MS with symmetrical framming.

Mise en Scene

-The trailer is advertising the christmas special so obviously it is set at christmas time, therefore it has to fit in with the conventions of christmas.
E.g. Bright lights, red and green colours, christmas decorations, lots of people about shopping.
-It is set at night time which could suggest it being the night before christmas.
-The characters are shadowed by the christmas trees which creates foreboding as if something bad is about to happen.

Editing

-There are 11 individual shots.
-Each shot fades to black in the transitions to build up suspense.
-There are quick cuts which is typical in soaps and soap trailers to be able to identify each character and their individual storylines.
-Fade ins and outs take place between the shots.

Sound

-There is a traditional Christmas tune at the beginning which is an example of non-diegetic sound as it's been added in later. This fits in with the conventions of Christmas
-The speed of the tune gradually slows down and begins to sound almost eerie, this could be suggesting that Christmas isn't going to be as happy as it seems.
-The dialogue consists of each character speaking individually as they are being introduced to the scene, Their voices sound echoed and distance which creates an almost alienated atmosphere.
-At the end of the trailer a narrators voice takes over which is another example of non-diegetic sound.

1st Preliminary Task- Mary Worth

Evaluation

The task was to produce a video of a comic strip to prepare for coursework. First of all I had to pick a comic to work with, I choose Mary Worth because we decided to play on the parody. The target audience for this video would range between early teens to young adults because of the song lyrics and it would be of mixed gender. I used seven pictures and changed the words in the speech bubbles to the lyrics of Katy Perry’s California Girls. I then had to film each picture individually for a few seconds depending on how long the speech bubbles were. Doing this enabled me to add a dialogue on top of the video. Filming each slide individually meant that the camera shot was kept at a fixed medium shot. In terms of the framing of the images, a two person shot is used in slide 3, an asymmetrical shot is used in slide 6 and a close up shot is used in slides 7 and 8 which brings us closer to the characters. I added a sound theme to slides one and two and during editing I applied a ‘fade out' which fit with the transition from slide two to three.

This was the first time I had used ‘Adobe Premiere elements 8.0’ and I learnt how to upload a video file and extract the audio and then upload another video file and keep only the audio from it and merge it together, this avoided the sound of background noise. I also learnt how to apply slide transitions to each slide which made the video look more effective and professional. I learnt how to use youtube as i made an account and uploaded this video, later using the URL address to paste onto my blog. If I was to complete this task again I’d make quite a few improvements. First would be including more camera motion in the filming of this comic strip. I’d mainly include ECU’s and CU’s and the use of panning and zoom. I’d also think more about the narrative, therefore making sure it h
ad a clearer storyline and id consider more the overall representation of the piece.
